Welcome to Country
The 2008 Convention Welcome to Country was delivered by Mr Richard Davis of the Woddi Woddi Tribe, Dharawal Nation
The Little Ngargens dance group from the Shellharbour Aboriginal Community Youth Association followed the Welcome to Country with several traditional dances including a cleansing dance and a welcome dance
Keynote Address
The Keynote Address at the 2008 Convention was given by Melbourne GP Dr Mukesh Haikerwal, Commissioner on the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission and immediate past president of the AMA
Medical Observer-GPET Awards
2008 GP Registrar of the Year, Dr Tim Francis, from North Coast GP Training and Bilambil, northern NSW, accepts his award from Medical Observer co-editor Mr Simon Wooldridge
The GP Supervisor of the Year Award went to Dr Brett Thompson, from Milton, NSW and CCC Training
GPET Awards
Dr Nick Cooling, Director of Training for General Practice Training Tasmania, accepts his award for ME of the Year from GPET Chair Assoc Prof Simon Willcock
Dr John McEncroe, Chair of Victorian Metropolitan Alliance (VMA), accepted the RTP Staff Excellence Award on behalf of the winner, VMA CEO Dr Mark Rowe
For the second year in a row, Dr Bruce Mugford, CEO of South Australian RTP Sturt Fleurieu, accepted the GPET Award for RTP Innovation
Dr Nick Cooling accepted the GPET Award for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Training on behalf of Ms Caroline Spotswood, of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre
Writing Awards
The winner of the Australian Doctor-GPET Supervisor Writing Award for 2008 was Dr Genevieve Yates, of Cooroy in Qld and CSQTC RTP, who received her award from Australian Doctor's Paul Smith for her article 'What would the Coroner think?'
Dr Colleen Bradford of WAGPET RTP collected the 2008 Australian Doctor-GPET Registrar Writing Award on behalf of Kathleen Potter, of Dongara WA, who won for her entry 'The Good Life'
Convention Objectives
The General Practice Education and Training Convention provides an annual national forum for those involved in vocational education and training in general practice and rural medicine. The Convention aims to:
- Bring delegates together to focus on future opportunities and challenges in general practice vocational training
- Showcase innovation in medical education and training
- Provide opportunities for networking and cross-fertilisation of ideas
- Provide opportunities for GP trainers and educators to acquire skills from each other
- Provide an opportunity for the academic advancement of general practice training
- Cater to and welcome GP registrars and promote greater involvement of registrars in education and training
- Contribute to the development and promotion of general practice as the career of choice for future generations
- Develop solutions for the future needs of general practice training and promulgate them to the wider community
